Subject:Questions re: Chinese Roof Tile
Posted By: Marcus L Mon, Apr 10, 2017 IP: 108.44.43.44

I understand this is an antique Chinese roof tile a long time. It was carefully made into a lamp probably around 100 years ago. thats all I can tell you about it. Can anyone tell me the exact period it was made and whether it depicts a warrior from the period it was made or a warrior from a prior era? maybe where it was made? Ive seen others that are more detailed and seem more delicate (especially in the legs). Is this one older or just more utilitarian than those? Actually any information you can tell me about it would be greatly appreciated.

Whether genuine or not (I have no expertise with these), this is supposed to be a Ming dynasty (1368-1644) roof tile but seems as you have noted somewhat cruder than other examples. The headdress is Ming in style, but I think the figure is meant to be a high-ranking government official rather than a warrior. Am not optimistic that you will be able to learn a specific date or place of manufacture, as I imagine there were local kilns across the country that would supply local structures with tilework including these decorative pieces.

Thank you so much for the information. your suggestion that he may be a government official would explain the lack of weaponry and less than aggressive stance. I truly appreciate your insight.
