Subject:Help with Chinese Painting
Posted By: Ash Thu, Apr 27, 2017 IP: 88.98.209.66

Hi,
I brought this recently from Manchester. The seller inherited this from his Medic Grandfather in inheritance and knew nothing much about it as no one read Mandarin in the household.
It has 17th Century framers mark on the backside.
I believe experts here can help me out on who the artist could be based on signature on the painting.
It is of size 22 cm X 11 cm in size.

Japanese painting or print (probably print).

Caption Jitoku So, self-satisfied older person, and the artists name and seal - YuShin.

Perhaps the whole caption refers to the artist, rather than the subject.

自得叟祐信

Many thanks for views - Mikel's. Much appreciated - any idea how old it can go esp alfred Davis was out of of operation since a century of so and it stated back in 1720s in London. Guess from the style of painting or dress? Edo period?

Probably a Meiji era woodblock reproduction of an ukiyo-e painting by Nishikawa Sukenobu (西川祐信, 1671 - 1750) depicting a beauty (bijin) giving a letter for her lover to her child servant.
Signed 'Jitokusô Sukenobu' (自得叟祐信) with 'Sukenobu' seal.

Guy.
