Subject:A believed 19th century Chinese hardwood chair
Posted By: Simon Nicholson Mon, May 15, 2017 IP: 2a00:23c4:84c7:0700:

Dear Forum,
I bought the chair recently at auction with a view to (I hope) repairing it. I am finding some difficulty though finding anything similar for comparison.

My questions to the forum are 1) Could anyone offer any information identifying what sort of chair it is, 2) when it might have been made and 3) what type of wood it is made from.

Below are photos of the chair, the underside of the piece and a close up of the top of the arm rest (this area best shows the grain).

Many thanks and all the best.

A word of caution. Chinese joinery techniques are very different from those common in the West. I suggest you seek professional help before attempting any repair.

If you Google "Chinese joinery" you will begin to discover the differences.

Ah,
I remember it actually.
We were interested in it but didn't find the time to view. My suggestion would be to type 'huanghuali conservation' into a google search engine.
Best regards,
Kirk

Understand the design is fashioned typically from southern part of China during the Qing dynasty. If you have more detailed photos of wood pattern to determine the wood type. From your photo my guess is definitely not huanghuali.
