Subject:Small Oval Cup - Blue & White
Posted By: Eddie Sat, May 20, 2017 IP: 70.195.192.63 Any help with information on this small oval cup would be appreciated. It is oval at the top but round at the base and the height measures from 2 1/8" to 2 1/4", the oval top measures 2 1/4" x 3" and the base measures 2 1/4". No marks. The bottom of the base is glazed with the center having a higher gloss than the outer ring (not foot rim). Some black pits. There is one small wiout glaze which is surrounded by pits. There is also double blue ring near the top and at the bottom is a desing which looks like either fingers or a hill. No idea. This piece, the celadon plate and other pieces came from the same estate. |

Posted By: mikeoz Mon, May 22, 2017 I think this could be a Japanese Soba Choko, a cup specifically used in eating soba (buckwheat) noodles. |

Posted By: Bill H Wed, May 24, 2017 I'll help jump-start your research with this one. I gather from some of my online research that this mark appeared on Chinese Jingdezhen soba cups exported to Japan during the Ming Dynasty, but wonder if anyone else has ever heard this story. |
