Subject:Help Identifying age / origin of Oriental embroidery on silk picture
Posted By: Bill B Fri, Aug 04, 2017 IP: 66.176.18.23

Please reference the included images. It's about 16.5" x 27.5". The image is of a large eagle sitting in a cherry tree another smaller bird (eagle?) in the sky, the sun and some Japanese / Chinese characters in the upper right corner.
I am hoping to find out the age and origin of this item and also the translation of the characters. Thanks for looking.
Regards,
Bill

I can't help with the full title in black script, but the first two characters refer to the eagle. According to my experience from assisting in recent estate liquidations, this style of embroidery can be dated to around the third quarter of the 20th century. A number of examples I've seen and handled had belonged to former military personnel who had acquired the bulk of their orientalia collections from military exchange stores while serving in Asia during the Vietnam War years and later.

I would hazard a guess that your embroidery is Chinese (from Taiwan), but the Military Exchange System also contracted with providers in Japan and Korea during the same period, and such crafts were widely available on local markets as well.

Here's a similar embroidered picture with a Chinese "100 Birds" motif having colors and stylistic elements similar to yours. It was in the estate collection of a retired Naval veteran who served in the Pacific.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Bill H. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate you taking the time. I was thinking mid 20th century also. I'm hoping someone will be able to do the translation. I've done a fair amount of searching online and I've not been able to to find any similar items combining the eagle and cherry tree motif.

Bill

The text reads left to right, so perhaps from the PRC since 1979; it means "spread your wings (and fly) like the eagle" 雄鹰展翅

Hi Rat,
Thank for looking and replying. It's interesting to know direction of text can indicate age.

Bill

it depends on the situation, Bill H sounds pretty convincing too, but there's a possibility it's post 1979 PRC-made
