Subject:Old Chinese Crackleware Vase
Posted By: Steve D. Wed, Sep 27, 2017 IP: 72.239.255.193

May I ask a favor? To provide some information and a translation from this old Chinese crackleware vase. The vase is 25” tall. Although this shows signs of “repairs” my reading and research “suggests” this may be over 200 years old. The repairs are steel staples, and this “technology” was used well before the advent of adhesives and “super glue”. This vase has been in our family for more than 50 years. Thanks, in advance for any and all help. Sincerely, Steve D. Florida, USA

Dear Steve

This frequently encountered vase type is sometimes called "incised brown ware" and began to be made in the late 19th century. Although it continued to be made into the 20th century I would say the staple repairs do indicate that this is a fairly early example.

To put it another way, this vase cannot be 200 years old, but it may well be 100.

Dear Steve

If it is any help, the vase pictured below, from page 33 of Anthony Allen's first book, is remarkably similar to yours. It coincidentally even includes staple repairs. Mr Allen dates this object to the third quarter of the 19th century.

Kind regards
JLim
