Subject:Drawing 1841 date Japanese?
Posted By: John Thu, Oct 05, 2017 IP: 94.197.120.4

Hi everyone, I purchased this drawing (I think it is a drawing!) it is in an old frame and the back shows age. There is also a date written thinly 1841 or something similar I think in the drawing. I purchased it from an auction it wasn't noticed by anyone under a bunch of other photos so I purchased it. Can anyone tell me anything at all about it. Your expertise here is much appriecated. Thank you.

It looks like a Japanese woodblock print. Given the style, my guess it is from the 1700s. Given that is framed and, likely, has been displayed, I would expect more degradation and, thus, suspect it is not an original but a later copy.

Cheers,
Stan

Thank you for the reply, any idea on the artist by the style? What date would you give the print you think it's 1800's print of a 1700 print?
Thanks for the help and info it is appreciated

First the reading and translation of the woodblock print text,
寝る事も程ふ過さね
戒も少なしなむ中乃其一つぞや
Neru koto mo hodofu sugosane
Imashime mo sukunashinamu naka no sono hitotsu zo ya
Sleeping is also a form of passtime
At least I am not pestered, it is not even incidental

Judging from the general style and from the
style of the kana characters I think it is from
the mid 19.c. and not older.

With regards,
I.Nagy
