Subject:Scroll is it a replica
Posted By: Monique van Bolhuis Fri, Oct 20, 2017 IP: 217.104.21.238 This scroll I bought recently, it seems to be hand painted, but maybe it is a replica seeing the edge? And does one of you know the maker? Thanks! MoMo |

Posted By: rat Sat, Oct 28, 2017 Fantasy piece, not a replica. As I. Nagy posted, the name signed to this picture is Xu Wei, a well-known Ming painter. However the inscription on your scroll is not in Xu's handwriting, and no landscape by Xu survives. As far as we know, Xu painted only plants and animals. Your picture is a recent creation imitating Song dynasty-influenced Ming paintings but in a contemporary version of traditional style. (sorry if that sounds confusing) |

Posted By: rat Wed, Nov 01, 2017 Traditionally, Chinese paintings are mounted by first backing them with a thick paper, and then frequently with silk borders pasted around on all sides. Your picture appears to be printed on a white sheet of paper and then bordered with a blue strip of paper. Here's a youtube video about the traditional mounting process. See from around minute 4 for the cutting and gluing of the decorative borders around the picture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8_jZtq-p5Q |
