Posted By: John Fosket Sat, Nov 11, 2017 IP: 97.95.174.92

I am trying to interpret what is written on the painting and the artist's signature Is it possibly dated as well?
I have no idea how to find a url address so I am not sure I can post a picture. I am in hopes the link below will show a picture of the painting and the signature with the writing.

Dated probably 2000. signed and sealed GuoZheng 果正。

A reference to the parable from Daoist philosopher Zhuang Zi, who wondered if he was dreaming of being a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming of being him.

I really like this.

Reading of inscription:
夢蝶 Dream Butterfly
庚辰年 Year of Metal-Dragon (2000)
Signature:
果正 作 Painted by Guo Zhen
Seal:
果正 Guo Zhen
Under this name I couldn`t find painter in Chinese language net.

Explanation to the title;
It is an allusion to the widely known story in China which is called "Butterfly Dream of Zhuang Zhou.
Zhang Zhou dreams of a butterfly or is it the butterfly dreaming of Zhang Zhou.
Zhang Zhou (369-286 BC) was a Taoist author.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you very much for your sharing of knowledge.
One question though, what do you think the answer is?

I am now sure this response goes to all three of the people who responded o just one but I mean it for all 3.

It's dated 2000, by someone using the art name or with the given name Guozheng 果正, depicting Zhuangzi's story of being unsure if he had dreamed about a butterfly, or if he was a butterfly dreaming of being a human. The title is "dreaming of a butterfly 夢蝶". The painting is in the style of Fan Zeng. Here is Fan Zeng's version of the same scene: https://mediablaw.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/213277_230914057_2.jpg
and a copy of that painting by Fan Ji, inscribed by Fan Zeng: http://www.csstoday.com/UploadFiles/Topics/2017/3/201703091047176668.jpg
