Subject:I am new at this!
Posted By: C. Ryan Thu, Nov 23, 2017 IP: 2601:48:1:1e3e:ecd4:

I have three silk paintings that I do not know anything about. Can anyone help me identify the artist? I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Apparently 20th century? Japanese woodblock prints, larger photos might help

A close up pic on signature and seal would be appreciated.

These are three reproductions of famous Hiroshige prints from his (arguably) most famous series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road" (Tōkaidō gojūsan tsugi no uchi).

See: http://www.hiroshige.org.uk/hiroshige/Tokaido_Series/Tokaido_Great.htm

1) Station 21: Mariko: Famous Tea Shop (Mariko, meibutsu chamise)

2) Station 16: Kanbara: Night Snow (Kanbara, yoru no yuki)

3) Station 46: Shōno: Driving Rain (Shōno, hakuu)

The links below will take you directly to large versions of the prints.

1) http://www.hiroshige.org.uk/hiroshige/Tokaido_Series/Images/Hoeido_21_Mariko.jpg

2) http://www.hiroshige.org.uk/hiroshige/Tokaido_Series/Images/Hoeido_16_Kanbara.jpg

3) http://www.hiroshige.org.uk/hiroshige/Tokaido_Series/Images/Hoeido_46_Shono.jpg

Note that they have been converted from a landscape to a portrait format.

Cheers,
Stan

Thank you so much for that information! I checked out the links you sent and it is amazing how they are not exact reproductions. It is like someone just took elements of the original and created a new piece. I hope you do not mind me asking a couple of more questions. These are printed on silk or a some kind of material like silk--- is that normal? When I look very close I do not see any screens as in process printing. I assume as a reproduction they do not have much value? Thanks again. Any information is appreciated.

My area of interest is Japanese woodblock prints. I can't help you with paintings. If you can get better pictures (larger than a postage stamp) here, rat or one of the others may be able to help.

Cheers,
Stan

Thank you for that suggestion. I am hoping this link works. I took one of the three out of the frame so you can see it better. I believe these came from Japan where my aunt was traveling and she gave them to my mother. I would love to know if they are originals and if they have value. Certainly, as you said, they are reminiscent of Hiroshige's work.

Perhaps replace "reproduction" with "derivative". If, as you say, these are original paintings, it is easy to see from whence the artist drew his/her inspiration.

Stan

Reading of Signature:
祥雲 Shoun (Art name of artist)
Seal:
竜 Ryu (Dragon) (Leisure seal)

With this art-name only one painter can be found in
Japanese artist name dictionaries, his name is
Nonouchi Yasutaro (野々内保太郎)1902-1985、Famous of Bird -and-Flower painting. According to literature he has used the art-name "Shoun" only until 1932, then he changed it to Yasutaro.
I could find only pictures on net wit Yasutaro signature and seal.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you very much for the information you gave me on this artist. Do you know where I could find more about him--maybe a website? I tried to look but have not had much luck. Also, do you know if his paintings are valuable?

Thanks again for your help.
