Subject:What is the Chinese vases purpose?

I have this odd little vase with a hole in top and can't quiter figure out was it was used for. Does anyone know what it is and the age? It is about 4 inches high and much heavier than it should be, it must be weighted?

My best guess is that at one time it was used as a lamp

Most probably this vase is used for Japanese tea ceremony as part of the display implement. It got the wabi-sabi look and feel to it. The design reminds me of the chinese mallet vase but I guess the design might be borrowed from it. The small hole on the top is deliberately fashioned so that only one stalk of flower can be placed on the vase, aptly on the japanese zen approach to minimalistic and natural beauty
