Subject:Identify chinese/japanese artisit
Posted By: Emiel Mon, Dec 04, 2017 IP: 2a02:c7d:a1c8:9b00:d

I found this drawing in a shop, and am curious to know if the artist can be identified - I have asked a friend and all they could tell me is that the artist was someone by the name of Tan, and it was done in the year of the metal monkey (1920/1980).

Reading of inscription,
庚申年 Year of Metal-Monkey (...1920,1980)
譚甬(不)Tan Yong or Tan Beng -Art-name-
A Path to Talk or No Need to Talk
(Interesting combination of characters, depending whether the character“不” is put on (or followed by) the character
"用” or left as "甬”)
Seal reading,
譚不甬 Tan Beng or Tan Buyong (The above character combination in reverse order)
Leisure seal, (Left bottom)
欣向榮 Happily Prosperous

I could not find any clue to the artist neither on
net nor in dictionaries.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Subject:譚勇 Tan Yong

The last 3 characters at the top right corner of your painting (shown on your last picture are 譚勇畫
The last character 畫 means drawn by.

The artist's name is 譚勇 Tan Yong with Tan being his surname. When I googled 譚勇 I found two Chinese artists with such names but it took too long for the links to appear. You can research further using 譚勇 Tan Yong.

In this case, the seal script of 勇 was executed with 甬 as its left radical and 力 (power, force) as its right radical. (see picture) 勇 literally means brave, courageous or full of power (力) .

Hope this helps.

Super

Dear Emiel,
Thank to Super`s gracious indication, the correct reading of the painter`s name is;
譚勇 Tan Yong (Real Surname and Name of Artist).
From Chinese language net I have found the artist.
Tan Yong (1918-) Chinese flower and bird painter.
Served as professor of art at Nanjing Pedagogical
University of Fine Arts.
He was a disciple of Xu Beihong.
Furthermore, I could identify the same identical signature on one of his work on a 2004/11 "Spirit Collection" (sssc.com) auction site. (Chinese language)
Sorry for misleading you with my erroneous reading.
I also ought to say warm thanks to "Super"for his gracious help.
With regards,
I.Nagy
