Subject:Dating this Blue & White Japan Cup
Posted By: Paul Tue, Mar 20, 2018 IP: 2601:5cb:4400:b85:cf Another cup I am trying to determine the age, pattern or history of. It appears vintage with the crazing, stains and JAPAN stamp on bottom. In guessing its real, but with the fakes out there the professionals really know. Most appreciative of any information anyone has. Thanks again, Paul |

Posted By: Bill H Thu, Mar 22, 2018 I think conventional wisdom suggests a stand-alone "JAPAN" mark probably dates to sometime before "MADE IN JAPAN" appeared around 1920, though I've heard that some of the same "JAPAN" markings may have been applied around the time of the US occupation of Japan from 1945-54. In any event, this was Japan's attempt to compete with the English "Willow" pattern, and the only dated pieces I could spot online simply said 20th century. Some of them were marked "MADE IN JAPAN" and looked fairly new. |
