Subject:Old Japanese paintings recently inherited
Posted By: Bonheur Sat, May 05, 2018 IP: 62.202.181.240

Could anybody provide identification information about the ff paintings ?

The only background I can provide is there were probably offered by a Japanese cultural authority - Ministry or the like - for a cultural show organised at a museum in Western Europe around 50 years ago

First painting is 27 cm high, 2nd is 39, 3rd is 42 cm high.

Thank you !

The second is an 1856 Japanese woodblock print by Kunisada (signing as Toyokuni III). The Waseda University Theater Museum has a copy of your print, but the link on the page below is broken.

Cheers,
Stan

I think the title of your 2nd print is:

Kichijōji no ba Gejo o sugi Yaoya oshichi Koshō Kichisaburō

Something about a greengrocer. I suspect Kichisaburō is an actor in the Kabuki play. Perhaps, I. Nagy will help us out.

Cheers,
Stan
