Hi, back again to seek identification of Chinese ginger jar/tea caddy(?).
Thank you for looking/helping.

Chris

OK I think part of the mark is Qianlong.. no idea on the rest of it though.. ?

..and I have no experience in discerning whether the mark is authentic or apochryphal..?

An image search hasn't turned up any similar pattern yet and pot 'shows signs of age' to my untrained eye...

All contributions gratefully received and acknowledged..

The transfer-applied mark says "Made during the Qianlong Reign - Qianlong Nian Zhi). The gotheborg.com website assigns this mark an early to mid-20th century dating. The early half of the century covered the time when China began using transfer-printed decoration on a commercial scale.

Best regards,

Bill H.

OK so mark is "Nian Zhi Qian-long", a popular mark!! So here's my extremely ill informed take on this jar. The mark is poor quality, often a sign of an apochryphal or 'fake' mark.. Equally to be of the age (as marked) and complete and unchipped is extremely unlikely. Perhaps then, at best it might be 19thC but could just as likely be later. I'm told that older fars are heavier, ballast for stability as ship's cargo? My inexperience doesn't allow me to make any judgement on this but I bought it for the artwork/landscape for v little so don't feel too disappointed.

Still waiting on anyone to chip in with an opinion.
