Subject:Japanese Raku Maker's Mark Identification
Posted By: Stew Wed, Jul 04, 2018 IP: 42.98.127.247

Could someone help me to identify this maker's mark. The covered jar is, I believe Raku ware. It is light and seems quite fragile. The clay is black.

Size is about 17 cm tall with cover.

(I am sorry, the photograph is rotated)

Stew, I figured one of our Japanese contributors might take this on, but I'll make a stab at it in their stead. The mark shown in the middle photo appears to be ้›€้ทน , which is kanji for the Japanese sparrow hawk (tsumi), also rendered ้›€้ท‚, with the same transliteration. Perhaps someone will now offer the deserved critique of my reading and offer some comments on the piece itself, which has a glaze similar to that found on some old Shiwan (Shekkwan) ware from Guangzhou in China.

Best regards,

Bill H.
