Subject:Kutani Plate "Mark" on bottom - need help please
Posted By: Iain Thu, Jul 26, 2018 IP: 2601:602:780:28d0:95

I have looked and looked for this mark (from the bottom of a Kutani Plate). The way the plate was manufactured and decorated would seem to suggest the Edo period (1603 and 1868). Maybe 17th to 19th century. But, I cannot find, the exact mark anywhere. Any help would be great appreciated.

Hi Lain,

With exceptions (as Always):
What we now know as Kutani was only marked with fuku markings before the Meiji period and before Meiji it also wasn't known as Kutani but as Kaga ceramics. So Kutani marked pieces can't be older than Meiji period. If I turn the mark, as shown, 180 degrees you can read on the right side "Kutani". The left characters read "Suda Seika" At best (and I think it is) it's the mark of Suda Seika 1th. This means that your plate can date from around 1920. (as oldest).

Regards
Arjan
