Subject:Asian Vase
Posted By: George Cox Wed, Aug 01, 2018 IP: 2001:5b0:272b:9628:d

I purchased the vase 30 + years ago as a decorative piece. Don't even know if it's Chinese or Japanese. The artist's mark (I presume) is on its base, and is shown in the last photo. It's hexagonal. I'd very much appreciate any information as to its origin, age, and possible value. Thanks very much.

Hi George,

Your vase is Japanese and I guess about 100 years old. It's not porcelain but Satsuma-like ware, a kind of stoneware. It's probably made in Kyoto (kyo-yaki). The characters are probably made to fit pairs together.

Regards,
Arjan

The left hand of a pair of vases. Not a signature

My I venture to say that this vase could be
Korean.
The second character under 左 (Left) is the
Korean Hangul letter combination of "On"
(with one missing vertical stroke would be "Oen = Left in Korean)

With regards,
I.Nagy

Hi I.Nagy,

I don't think this is Korean.
The decoration is very typical Kyoto and also this kind of marking to fit pairs is typical for Kyoto. Very often only right, sometimes right and left and often a number or sometimes a symbol/character.

Regards,
Arjan
