Subject:Help Identifying Please
Posted By: George Field Wed, Aug 08, 2018 IP: 2600:1006:b15a:e6c2:

This is a large nicely done painting of 4 horses in the style of Xu Beihong. It's beautifully framed and has age suggesting it's from perhaps the around 1940s. I bought the painting from an estate in Tacoma Washington some years ago.

Any help would be appreciated. Maybe a student...?

Inscriptions in my translation,

昔有狂人為詩云
一得従千慮狂愚輒自夸以為真不悪
古人莫之加 悲鴻時客 西馬拉雅之大吉嶺

Once a madman said in his poem,
"The greatest fool, in a thousand schemes, must hit once the truth - and the fools often sing their own praises -but they are not bad"
The old fool, Beihong as guest in the Himalayan
Darjeeling

Seal,
悲鴻之印 - Seal of Beihong
Leisure seal,
生于憂患 - (Born in misery)

According to the literature Xu Beihong painted this picture in 1940 when he visited India at the invitation of Rabindranat Tagore. No word about what happened to the picture after that.

The seals look perfect.
If the original cannot be found in any museums or private collections, a more serious investigation would be needed to determine if it is a genuine.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you very much. I'll contact the Xu Beihong Memorial Museum and send some pictures. Again thank you.

Would you mind taking a look at this one also, and perhaps you can translate it for me as well. I got it at the same time that I got the Xu Biehong.

I really appreciate you helping me with this.

名園無二
There is no such thing as a famous garden
白石 - Baishi
斉大 - Qida (Too Rich) - Pseudonym
An another famous picture,
Name of painter, Qi Baishi 斉白石 1864-1957
The above picture is most probably a woodblock print made by the Pekingese Rongbaozhai editor in the 1950s.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Can you please direct me to a proper person to do an evaluation of my Asian paintings. I feel that there could be a lot of so called experts out there and I don't know how to find the right person.

Thank you.
