Subject:Chinese fan
Posted By: Gregory Fri, Aug 10, 2018 IP: 42.61.63.234

My mother bought and mounted this fan in the late 70's. I believe It was bought from a monestary on Lantau Island (Hong Kong).

Is anyone able to identify the artist and year associated with this work (pictures attached).

I believe the 'golden flecks' on the fan are indeed real gold leaf.

The calligraphic text consist 27 out of 33 lines of the poem titled "Stone Drum Song" 石鼓歌 by the Tang Dynasty writer, poet Han Yu 韓愈.
In the poem the poet expresses his cherished love for the ancient artifacts of China, the stone drums - the old stone stelae.
Colophon in my interpetation reads,
第七十八昭陽 - No. 78 Zhaoyang (District)
大荒落皐月揮汗為 - Lonely and desolate, in May , sweating profusely
擷琅賢荊 - To be acquired by Lang Xiajing
書 劍翁時年六十之七 ‐ Written by Jian Old man (Pseudonym) at the age of 67
Seal reads,
文達印 - Seal of Wenda - Who Understands the Script - (Art-name chosen by many calligraphers)
(Not Gu Wenda)
Unfortunately, I cannot read the surname seal.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Difficult to say anything sure about the age,
it could be from the beginning of 20the C.
(100 +- years old)

Well done!

This is a nicely written fan.

Small suggestion: the month would have been the fifth in the lunar calendar, so probably around July rather than May.
