Subject:Help to identify origin and or period of this jade lamp
Posted By: Andrew N Fri, Oct 26, 2018 IP: 136.143.140.124

Recently rescued this item.
It seems very old yet sturdy.

My best guess is it is some sort of Jade. It is a beautiful looking piece with interesting signs of aging.

I am not a collector of these or any antiques.

Just happened to come across it.

I do not know if I should try to see if it works?
There are no markings anywhere but on the electric cord (Leviton) and the light sockets (Benjamin 250V)

There is also no shade with it. I wonder what it may look like.

Any help would be appreciated. Where is this gentleman from?

Thank you.
Andrew N

From what I can see this is most likely a Serpentine, roughly carved. I would not touch this one!

This is an inexpensive Chinese soapstone figure of an elder mounted as lamp base. This is circa 1920s or thereabouts. Not particularly valuable. If the carving was of better quality, it would be much more valuable. Wholesale/auction would be around $100 or thereabouts.

Personally I would buy it. It is an antique and these lamps are harder to find than people imagine. 1920-1930 is my guess. Put a beautiful shade on it and if you're decorating your place you'll have a wonderful statement piece lamp. On a side table in the corner it should look great. All that of course depends on the price. As mentioned earlier its a $100 piece. Maximum!

Thanks for your input (everyone).
I have aquired the lamp and will keep it for an enjoyment piece.

I really appreciate all the help.
