Subject:Burmese Praying Statue
Posted By: Michelle Mon, Jan 14, 2019 IP: 107.215.0.176

Can anyone help identify this statue. I bought it because the wood looked very old to me. Not sure if a reproduction or an actual old statue. Also, what does the lettering on the back say? Thanks!!

Your praying monk probably is one of two that usually are seen flanking an image of the Shakyamuni Buddha in Burmese temples to represent the Buddha's two principal disciples, Sariputta and Moggllana. You can query the names on Google and get a host of other information. Your monk image probably dates to the late 19th or early 20th century.

Here's a pair I collected in Burma when it was still Burma. They are shown out of context, with an image of the Maitreya Bodhisattva in his avatar form as the Cloth Sack Monk or 'Budai Heshang'.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you Bill, I'm so glad I rescued him from Good Will. Does the writing on the back mean anything? Thanks so much for your help.

Sorry, but during my time in Burma, I was too busy collecting stuff to learn more than a few polite words of the spoken language.
