Subject:Hokushu picture story and date
Posted By: Amy Summerhayes Sat, Feb 09, 2019 IP: 1.152.107.78

Hi, I’ve discovered that I have a Hokushu that I have inherited. I was wondering if anyone knows the story/title of the picture and when it dates back to. Also wondering if it has any value as there is some damage. I’d also like recommendations on how best to keep it without it being damaged further. Thank you Amy

Inscriptions,
Pic.1, (Upper)
さがみ - Sagami
中村松江 - Nakamura Matsue
(Nakamura Matsue as Sagami)
Lower,
春好斎北洲画 - Shunkōsai Hokushu-ga / Picture of Shunkōsai Hokushu
Pic. 2 -Publisher`s mark -
本清 - Honsei (Shōhonya Seishichi 正本屋清七)
(around 1825)

This is the left side of a diptich depicting a stage from the Kabuki play titled "Ichi no Tani Futaba Gunki" - a story from the Genpei Wars (12.C.)

With regards,

For details, see the Boston MFA copy here:

Your print is faded and has foxing and staining. Restoring it would cost more than it is worth. Store it in an acid free folder away from light.

Cheers,
Stan

From further looking at the Boston MFA site, I discover that your print is part of a diptych printed in 1825:

Cheers,
Stan
