Subject:CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY & SEAL TRANSLATION
Posted By: Selby Cook Fri, May 17, 2019 IP: 173.239.199.160

Would greatly appreciate any help in translating the two Chinese characters shown in the picture. I believe the seal is that of Wang Hui, a scroll artist who lived between 1632 and 1717. Many thanks for your help.

Fake.
And the artist is supposed to be Wang Jian rather than Wang Hui

What makes you think it is a fake? Do you mean it is a fake Wang Hui or a fake Wang Jian? Thanks.

Experience, including knowing what Wang Jian's actual signature looks like.

Dear Selby,
Just make it sure your picture is not from Wang Hui 王翬 1632-1717, but from an another earlier
artist Wang Jian 王鑑 1598-1677.
In the book titled "Seal Identifications of Chinese Calligraphers and Painters I-II (中國書畫家印鑑款識)2013" on p. 129-30 there are 58 seal prints listed from Wang Jian, but no one of them is matching exactly to the one on your picture. the originals are more elaborately cut. The conclusion is self-explanatory.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks to all who helped answer my question. I'm still not sure whose handiwork is on my scroll (one of three with almost identical painting technique, subject material, calligraphic style and signature with different seals) but your input is greatly appreciated. Your expertise is greatly appreciated.
