Subject:Translation of inscription on Chinese painted fan
Posted By: TimG Sat, Jun 29, 2019 IP: 2601:345:4200:94:184

I would appreciate if someone could give me a translation of this Chinese inscription / poem, and identify the artist and year if possible,

The box that the fan has been stored in has a handwritten note saying the fan was a gift given 1926 (if I'm reading the handwriting correctly).

The 3 photos I've posted are from right to left. The right side is one large set of marks. The left side is two sets f characters, plus a 5 character signature with 2 seals. I had to split the signature line due to the limit on photos...hopefully you can follow the line from photo 2 to photo 3.

The front of the fan is a nicely painted landscape with a small inscription - I'll post more photos later.

Thank you!

The text seems to come from a Qing collection of poems called 两当轩诗钞 compiled by Huang Yingren 黄景仁. The calligrapher is Hu Yingfa 胡穎發 from Zhongxiang, Hubei province. The inscription is dated to the sixth lunar month of 1890.

Thanks, Rat! There doesn't seem to be anthing on any English language websites about Hu Yingfa. So, I've attached a photo of the front painting and inscription. Could you tell me who the artist is? Maybe there will be more information available for him. Thanks.

This was painted by Zhao Zhen 趙震, who was from Changzhou, in autumn 1890, after the style of Wen Zhengming. You likely won't find anything in English on him either, but this is a nice little fan.

A folding fan Zhao painted can be seen here:
