Better photos are needed. . . close up and at a fair distance.

I wish I could give you better news, but your photos indicate that modern ( electrical) tools have ben used.

Thank you Ernest for your reply to my posting regarding the plaque.
You state the use of modern tools on the plaque, and as I have another ten pieces from the same bequest made to me, is it possible you can explain what marks lead you to this assessment, so I might examine the others to see if the same apples to them? I am finding it extremely difficult to gather solid information as I live in a location lacking such specialists.

Best regards

I am sure Ernest will provide a more learned answer than I.

Below you will see a piece of your plaque. The two arrows point to areas where a modern rotary tool was used to carve the scrolls. Image using a small flat rotating disc to carve those locations and you can see what I mean.

Below that is a close up of a piece of jade currently up for auction in Australia. Note the fineness of the details of the bird's foot, feathers, and head.

In short, taking a photo, blowing it up, and examining it closely, will go a long way to telling how it was made.

Cheers,
Stan

Stan - thank you so much for your posting - it has opened my eyes to many possibilities. First, I must improve my camera skills!

The previous owner of this plaque was passionate about 18th century Asian carved arts - coming from a highly artistic yet rigorous family. He would have eschewed fakes or modernity at all costs.
My question is - is this a fake or has it been 'fiddled with" with modern electric drills? The latter being quite possible! cheers
