Subject:Painted fan and calligraphy
Posted By: Marta Wed, Dec 11, 2019 IP: 95.247.124.239

I like this fan with a snail on the banana leaf. Can anyone tell me what the calligraphy says and if there is the author's name? Many thanks for your attention.
Marta

This is the 3rd and 4th line of a well known Chinese five character quatrain by Bai Juyi (Po Chu-i) (772-846)

隔窗知夜雨
芭蕉先有聲
Outside my window
I know it is raining
The leaves of banana first know its sounds

Signature,
鳳外史 - Feng Waishi - Pseudonym
I read the lower seal,
田金尤 - Tian Jinyou

I couldn't identify artist with the above names.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear Mr. Nagy, thanks for the clarification. So it's a Chinese artist, even if the painting is from Japan? Cordial greetings, Marta

Dear Marta,
This doesn't exclude the possibility that the person, probably a man of letters, who wrote this well known citation from the Chinese poet Bai Juyi was Japanese. This 鳳外史 (Phoenix scholar) pseudonym or fancy name could be either Chinese or Japanese. The reading of the seal would be decisive, but I am not quite sure with the 3rd character. In Japanese could be 田 金尤 Den Kinyu or Den Kane...

The Sino-Japanese reading of the citation:

Mado wo hedatete yosame wo shiri
Bashō mazu koe ari
(Translation is same with the translation from Chinese)

These kind of pseudonyms were used by scholars,
tea ceremony masters, haiku poets, etc.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear Mr. Nagy, thank you for the clarifications, as soon as I have received the painting from Japan, I will try to send better images of the seals. Cordial greetings. Marta
