Subject:Ancient painting of Cranes
Posted By: Andrea Tue, May 12, 2020 IP: 87.4.189.1

Hi. While I stay at home, I continue to tidy up my collection of oriental paintings and look for some missing information. This painting was purchased from Japan three years ago. Then the seals (or one of the seals) were read as Ryudo 龍洞. There was also a label that I believe referred to the painting. The surface seems rather ancient and the assembly also seems to be redone with the old fabric. Can anyone help me with more information? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Take care of your health.
Andrea

Upper seal,
龍洞 - Ryudō
Lower seal,
口盛 - 囗mori (sei)
(I can't read the 1st character)

Penciled script,
老松双鶴 - Old pine and two cranes
名物裱褙 - Special mounting

Yamamoto Ryudō 山本龍洞 1845-1913
Meiji era painter. Born in Edo with Shinano Iida clan origins as the son of the Neo-Confucian scholar Fuchii Tenryu。Learned painting at Tosa clan's Yamamoto Gyo'ō. Was good at bird and flower painting.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Many thanks Nagy. The only image of a painting by Yamamoto Ryudō that I found on the net is the one that I attach. But it seems to me a style and an era different from what I posted. Could it be two painters with the same name? Thanks again and best regards,
Andrea

If you search in Japanese you can find a lot more paintings from him. Be that as it may, the painting of this raccoon dog is rather different in style from the other paintings from him. Mostly flower and bird paintings. I also could find out, that he had used a few different kind of "Ryudō" seals. I couldn't find exactly the same with the "pine and cranes".
A propos, the lower seal reads,
惠盛 - Keisei (Shigemori) - Possibly the real name or courtesy name of the artist.

I.Nagy

Thanks Nagy, in fact looking for the name in Japanese you will find images more compatible with the cranes than that of the painting of the raccoon dog. But, couldn't it be Tanaka (Zuitai) Ryurei (commonly known as Ryudojin, 1740-1804), he is referred to also as Ryurei Zuitai and or Ryudo Reizui or simply Ryurei? Best regards
Andrea

The only problem with Tanaka Ryudo or Ryudojin is
that the "do" is different.
龍道 and 龍道人 We are looking for a 龍洞 !
