Subject:Help identifying artist of Chinese landscape on silk
Posted By: jeff sutton Mon, Nov 30, 2020 IP: 75.129.11.233

I was wondering if anyone had seen this landscape before. I aquired it about a year ago and think it is an amazing landscape example on silk. I've gotten 6 of the 7 seals identified (3 Xiang Yuanbian (2 as Xiang Zhizijing, 1 as Xiang Morin) 1 Xiang family, 1 Zhang Zezhi (aka Zhang Xiaosi) and one of Emperor Qianlong.) I was wondering if any of these are the artist or if they are all collector seals. I was also wondering if anyone had thoughts on age (images of foxing ect linked) or additional information on the seals. Thankyou for taking a look - it's very appreciated.

Looks likes a good reproduction of a very good Yuan +/- picture in the Li-Guo tradition by someone like Zhu Derun, Cao Zhibo, or Ma Shi. Show a clear photo of the seal you are missing info on and I'm sure I. Nagy will have the legend read in an instant. Is it the one at upper left?

Rat, Thanks - The seal I haven't found anything on is in the lower right - it is pretty hard to make out. I've attached the best Pics I can take right now (My good camera battery just stopped charging). Here is the info I was told about the other seals: (anything you or I. Nagy could add or refute would be greatly appreciated.) the top right:

張則之 - Zhang Zezhi (also 張孝思 - Zhang Xiaosi: calligrapher, painter and collector)

the 2nd from the top right:

項氏子京 - Xiang Zhizijing (another name of 項元汴 - Xiang Yuanbian: a collector)

the top left (circle)

乾隆御覽之寶 - Emperor Qianlong's Treasure

the top left (rectangle)

檇李項氏士家宝玩 - Xiang family's treasure

the 2nd from the bottom left:

項子京家珍藏 - the collection of Xiang Zhizijing(another name of 項元汴 Xiang Yuanbian)

the bottom left:

項墨林鑑賞章 - appreciated by Xiang Morin(another name of 項元汴 Xiang Yuanbian)

Oval seal next to it,
乾隆御覧之寶 - Treasure Seen by Qianlong

With regards,
I.Nagy

All sound reasonable to me, but you'll need to put a filter on the camera or otherwise edit to get a legible shot of the seal at bottom right.

One way to get to the title/painter of the picture is to search for seals of Zhang Xiaosi, the calligrapher whose seal appears at upper left; the source of the seal image will often give the name of the picture on which the seal appears. That's a needle in haystack errand for Xiang Yuanbian and Qianlong seals though, as both appear on large numbers of artworks.

Sorry, I see that from your message that the top right seal is Zhang's. So looking in 中国书画家印鉴款识 (which focuses especially on works in the Shanghai Museum), it includes four examples of his seals that read Zhang Zezhi: one bird and flower picture by Ding Yunpeng (not yours), one Shen Zhou landscape (not yours), one Zha Shibiao landscape (not yours: https://wximg1.artimg.net/news/201612/2016121607042912690.jpg), and one Du Jin landscape, "Autumn Woods" (again not yours). (None of those artists painted in the style of your picture). But you get the idea.
