Subject:Japanese painting artist/date identification
Posted By: Kevin Tue, Dec 29, 2020 IP: 2601:643:8581:11c0:6

I’ve acquired an unframed painting that looks to be on an old canvas. I would be much obliged for the translation of any characters. I’m hoping to find out the artist and date if possible.

Separately, what is the appropriate framing for this type of work? Is it just whatever catches my eye aesthetically, or is there a more traditional convention that should be followed with this type of a painting.

Thanks very much for the assistance.

I took the painting to two different antiquities dealers, both of whom believed the painting to be Chinese, not Japanese. One mentioned it looked to be an authentic handscroll, possibly part of a larger piece. Still no info on date or artist. Any other input or information greatly appreciated.

Your painting is Chinese,
Inscriptions,
秋山瀑布 - Autumn mountain - waterfall
仁方於戊申 - By Renfang in the Year of Earth-Monkey (1908,1968)
Seal,
仁方 - Renfang

Renfang 仁方 - (Benevolent person) - Pseudonym or given name
Unidentifiable artist.
From the screen I can't say sure which year fits to it in the 60 Year Cyclic Calendar.
On the other hand, it is a complet single piece.

With regards,
I.Nagy
