Subject:Painting by Mori Sosen?
Posted By: Andrea Fri, Apr 23, 2021 IP: 87.5.129.162

This painting appears to have the signature of Mori Sosen. But I think it's not original. The seal does not match any of the ones I have seen in Sosen's paintings. Can anyone help me with the translation of the writing on the back of the scroll? Many thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Andrea

My reading of seal,
字曰恒吉 - Ji iwaku Tsunekichi - Tsunekichi, according to the style-name
Inscription on the back (Right)
祖僊の指意冩 - Sosen no shii-sha - After the intentions of Sosen
I can't decipher the rather idiosyncretic continuous cursive script fully on the left side inscription.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Many thanks, Nagy.

What do you think the expression "Sosen no shii-sha" can mean? Does it indicate that it is an imitation or that it is a Sosen painting?

Best regards,
Andrea

Yes, it means, that it is an imitation.

Thanks Nagy and Peter.
I also know Sosen's works, having seen many reproductions on the net and books, or paintings in exhibitions and museums. And I realize the difference in quality compared to the images that I have posted. In fact I think it is an imitation (and of poor quality). But that said, I'm still interested in having as much information about a painting. This is why I was interested in understanding the meaning of the sentence written on the back.
Cordial greetings.
Andrea
