Subject:Author of the turtle paintings
Posted By: Andrea Sun, Jul 11, 2021 IP: 79.49.128.205

Hi, some time ago Nagy made several hypotheses about these paintings (https://asianart.com/phpforum/subforum.php?method=detailAll&Id=123447&sfid=4), now I see a painting by the same author (https : //www.ebay.com/itm/174835900313? hash = item28b5081f99: g: Vr4AAOSwCl5g6xzA) that the advertiser attributes to 磐 渓 大 槻 Bankei Ootsuki (1801-1878). I would like to know if anyone can clarify something about it. Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Andrea

I believe that the attribution is based on the signature of the collophon, photo 1, which, in effect, I think I can compare with another found on the net, photo 2, http://blog.livedoor.jp/sesson_freak/?p= 20

So I assume that the author of the collophon is Bankei Ootsuki and that of the painting a different person.

Andrea

Photo 1,
Colophon reads,
On an Autumn Day of the Year of
Earth-Sheep (1859)
Inscription by Bankei
Upper seal,
Kiyotaka, courtesy name Tsuchihiro
(Kiyotaka was his original name, Tsuchihiro was his courtesy name)
Lower seal,
Bankei

Photo2,
Colophon reads,
On an Autumn Day of the Year of Water-Rooster (1873)
Painting and Inscription by Bankei
Upper seal,
Seal of Hirataka Kazu
(I can't find this seal print in my ID books)
Lower seal,
Bankei

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks Nagy for your confirmation. But if Bankei is the author of the collophon, it is not yet resolved who the author of the painting is. I am also attaching the image of the box. Cordial greetings,
Andrea

Perhaps this solves the mystery. The available data are very incomplete and sometimes contradictory. I managed to unravel the followings.
Painter's signature,
Shōdō no Kijō-rōjin - Old Man of Turtle Castle from Shōdō
Upper seal,
Okuyō Sōko
Lower seal,
Genshin or Hara Kiyoshi ?

Imscription on box,
Painted by the Old Man of Turtle Castle
Approbation by Bankei

(Upper seal)
(Okuyō 奥陽 denotes his native land, the Tōhoku region, Shōyō is his art-name, Old Man of the Turtle Castle is his pseudonym))
His year of birth and death unknown.
a.k.a. Itō Kijō (Turtle Castle) 1st. gen.
He was one of the disciples of Matsuura Shōdō
Itō Sōko's son was Itō Kijō (2nd gen.)
1842-1918

With regards,
I.Nagy

Hi Nagy, thank you very much for your research. In fact, a bond with Matsuura Shōdō was also your first intuition. I couldn't find any other information about Itō Sōko. On the net I found another image that I am attaching with the same signature and with this caption: 松浦 松 洞? (亀 画) 四条 派 幕末 明治 大幅 尊 攘 運動 古 美術 肉 筆 紙 本 (aucfree.com). Unfortunately the site is not accessible and it is not possible to get a better image.
A very cordial greeting,
Andrea

68 (78) Years Old
The 1st character is too blurredt to read
Shōdō Kijō - Kijō from Shōdō
Upper seal is illegibly blurred
Lower seal,
Genshin or hara Kiyoshi ?
This is same with the seal of Ito Kijo's seal on the previous painting.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Hi Nagy,
definitely:
The signature is
Shōdō no Kijō-rōjin - Old Man of Turtle Castle from Shōdō
The seals:
Upper,
Okuyō Sōko
Lower,
Genshin or Hara Kiyoshi?

I'm sorry but I didn't understand if, according to your deduction, the painter is Itō Sōko (aka Itō Kijō [Turtle Castle] 1st. gen. 伊藤 龜 城, dates of birth and death unknown) or Itō Kijō ([2nd gen.] 1842-1918, son of Itō Sōko). And which of the two was a pupil of Matsuura Shōdō?

A cordial greeting and sincere thanks,
Andrew

The 1st gen. Itō Kijō was a pupil of Matsuura Shōdō.
