Subject:Brass vase - identify the marking
Posted By: KK Wed, Jan 05, 2022 IP: 49.181.220.51

Hi.. I recently bought a brass vase and found markings on the bottom which I’ve identified to be similar to a Xuande reign marking. I’m not sure if it’s authentic, and the 6th character (first one from the left in the bottom row) doesn’t look like the usual marking for zhi.

I’d highly appreciate if anyone can identify it for me. Thanks!

The apocryphal six character mark reads,
大明宣徳年造 - Daming Xuande Nian Zao - Made During the Xuande Reign of the Great Ming Dynasty

Zao 造 and Zhi 製 (制) are different characters with the same meaning "made".

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks, appreciate it!

How can I now authenticate the vase? It’s been recently polished and doesn’t carry any patina. And it’s a bottle vase, unlike any of the images I’ve seen online of either older or more recent examples with Xuande marking
