Subject:x 3 Japanese woodblock print question
Posted By: richard Sat, Feb 19, 2022 IP: 2a00:23c2:fc00:9a00:

Dear All,

Could any of the experts on here enlighten me on the tiny seals on 2 of the 3 woodblock prints?
Are these publishers seals, date seals, authenticity seals or.....?
I know the famous Wave print is by Hokusai, but don't know who the other two prints are by?
Any information is appreciated.

Stay safe. Richard

The first print is by Hiroshige and is #98 Fireworks at Ryōgoku Bridge (Ryōgoku hanabi 両国花火) from his series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (Meisho Edo hyakkei 名所江戸百景). Here is a link to the series:

First of all thank you both for your replies. Appreciated as always.
Could some one tell me if these Wood block print copies have any value at all or if these copies can be dated to a year? Also why do 2 prints have the tiny round seal (C/W?) in the corner and one print doesn't?
Sorry just curious as these 3 prints seem to be of a good quality, compared to some Woodblock copies I have found.

Best wishes and stay safe.

Richard

The value is decorative. Typical auction values are about $100 per. On artelino.com:

1) The Fireworks at Ryōgoku Bridge print sold for $140 on October 10, 2021.

2) The Great Wave print sold in the range of $60 - $200.

3) The Yui: Satta Peak print sold in the range $50 - $110.

Stan

Again thank you for your reply, much appreciated.
I just wondered if there was a difference in price between old(er) say early 1900's reprinted Japanese woodblock prints and say the same Japanese woodblock print reprinted with more modern technology in the last few years.
Also if there is a way to tell the difference between a modern Woodblock reprint or an old(er) woodblock reprint.
Thank you all again, learning every day from the expert replies on this board

Stay safe in these troublesome times.

Richard
