Subject:Nguyen Thanh Le Sculpture / Base Mounting
Posted By: TdC Fri, Aug 26, 2022 IP: 23.108.191.237

Hello All,

Can anyone tell me about the “nut & bolt” on the base of the sculpture that was used to hold the piece in place, and if so, was it common practice in Vietnam at that time?

There has been some discussion and doubts that a foundry would mount an original piece so crudely.

All comments and opinions are welcome.

Thank you,
TdC

I've owned one of these in the past (the one shown above being a photo of it used in past queries to the forum) and have had a long time to ponder this question over the years.

This is one of at least two different versions of Nguyen Thanh Le castings of heads of Asian women I've seen, the other having the neck squared off at the bottom and balanced on a rod for support, while this one has the neck modeled after that of a bust; i.e., extended down in front. All things considered, I believe the nut and bolt was better suited for the stability of this style of casting, which probably was meant to be viewed from its front, where the nut and bolt would not be conspicuous.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you, Bill. I appreciate your help and answering my question. It does make sense that the sculpture would be mounted in this manner. The piece is very nice.

Regards,

I'm hoping that you might know something about Nguyen Thanh Le sculptures and able to help me with my post about "Nguyen Thanh Le authentication". Any help would be appreciated.
