Subject:Japanese Prints Dates
Posted By: Cliff Schulz Mon, Sep 19, 2022 IP: 2601:586:401:6720:43

I have several prints which were either picked up by father in the 1960 or my grandfather in about 1905. Can you tell from the coligraphy which is right?

These appear to be reproductions of two prints from Hiroshige's famous The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road (Tōkaidō gojūsan tsugi no uchi (東海道五十三次之内)) also known as the Great Tōkaidō originally printed in 1833-34.

The first is Station #7: Fujisawa: The Yûgyô-ji Temple. See the link below for an original at the Boston MFA:

The second is Station #29 Mitsuke: Tenryū River View. See the link below for an original at the Boston MFA:

See the link below for the complete series.

Thank you for your reply. I believe these were acquired in 1905. We're reproductions being made that early? I take it there is no date on them.

I seem to remember that there was a complete set of reproductions done in 1893 that has some collector value. Of course, when I think I remember something like that, I can't find it on the web.

Cheers,
Stan

Stan: Thanks for your interest. The reason I am asking is because my grandfather was a gold miner who stuck it rich in Goldfield Nevada. He built a large house and went to San Francisco to get it's furniture and decorations. I suspect this was where the prints came from. I have four of them.
