Subject:Small Ceramic cups
Posted By: Sharon D Smith Sat, Dec 31, 2022 IP: 2603:8001:800:db79:e

I have 4 ceramic tea cups with pictures of horses on them 4 different colors with writing on the bottom. I would like to know what the cups are (kind) and where they came from? I would also like to know what the writing says?

Thank you

The two-character stack in the mark (upside down as shown) indicates they are Japanese Kutani. Can't decipher the rest. In my opinion, probably mid 20th century, post-World War II.

Best regards,

Bill H.

They are japanese Kutani ware o-chokos; small cups made of ceramic or porcelain dedicated to serving sake.
Marking reads,
九谷 馬之とし - Kutani Uma no Toshi - Kutani, Year of Horse

With regards,

Recent Years of the Horse came around in 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 and 2014, so if I'm on track, your cups likely would be post-1954 (Next Horse Year, which will bode fortune for me, will be 2026).

Cheers to all,

Bill H.
