Subject:unknown japanese woodblock print
Posted By: Francis Sun, Jan 08, 2023 IP: 2a01:e0a:871:8270:d4

I am looking for any information on this strange print:topic,title,date,signature. It might be a section of a diptych...
Thanks

The title of your print is ときやうのはらの」which an online translator gives: Tokiyau no Hara no Ue. The only place I can find that has a copy of your print is the Waseda University Theater Museum. The artist is unknown.

I suspect your print is by the same artist as my diptych below.

Cheers,
Stan

Dear Stan,
Your reading of the title is right, but the meaning does not make sense because it is not marked with voiced consonant marks In reading we have to add thevoiced consonant marks.

Without voiced consonant marks;
ときゃうのはらの上
With voiced consonant marks;
どきゃうのはらの上
In modern kana transcription;
どきょうのはらの上
Rewriting in Roman alphabet;
Dokyou no hara no ue
Rewriting in contemporary mixed writing;
度胸の腹の上
In English translation;
On one`s courageous spirit

The picture shows some satirical examples of courage situations, e.g.
desperate courage, daredevil courage, not enough courage, courage of defeat, courage of lie etc.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear I. Nagy,

Thank you for the clarification. You are much better than any online translator.

All the best,
Stan
