Subject:Japanese KUTANI plate?
Posted By: Ausra Sun, Jul 16, 2023 IP: 2a01:e0a:a64:5e60:81

Hello,
I have an old plate. I received it as a gift a few years ago.
And now I'm struggling because I want to know if this is really a Japanese KUTANI plate?
The person who gave me this plate then said that it was an early to mid 19th century rare plate.
The plate is really beautiful in my opinion. But a good friend of mine who came to my house said he doubted if it was original...
I'm a little lost right now.
Because I want to know if that plate is real or just some kind of copy?
Thanks everyone for your help :).
Best regards, Ausra

Perhaps your good friend has a touch of envy. That looks exactly as described to you by the donor. And the mark is clear - Ku Tani. 九谷 Two very simple characters, Remember them and you'll never miss a Kutani item.

A really very lovely piece of 19th Century Akae Saiko-Kutani. I particularly like the shape of the plate, really very nice.
In my opinion pieces such as this are currently greatly undervalued by Western markets (all markets in truth) given the skill, artistry, and beauty of the pieces. I don't know if this will ever change but I do know that appreciation of the lesser-known Japanese porcelain types is on the rise, here in Australia at the very least.
