Subject:China or Japan?
Posted By: Gabry Thu, Apr 25, 2024 IP: 79.27.78.143 Greetings. I'll try to post my question here: is the painter Chinese or Japanese? Can anyone read the name? Thanks for any help. |

Subject:China or Japan?
Posted By: rat Wed, May 15, 2024 I'm leaning Chinese despite some evidence it might be Japanese instead. The painter is using a pseudonym 大舟魚人 ("fisherman with a big skiff"), date is spring 辛未, so perhaps 1931 rather than 1991 given the foxing. First seal suggests painter's given name might be 可田. |

Posted By: Gabry Wed, May 15, 2024 Thank you very much Mr. RAT. The assembly actually seems to be made in Japan. Cordial greetings. |

Posted By: rat Thu, May 16, 2024 yes, the mounting seems Japanese, and the three seals at the top of the painting all contain unrelated content, none of which clearly identifies the artist associated with the pseudonym, which is more often seen on Japanese than Chinese pictures. the brushwork is not as distinctive as I would expect from Chinese painters either. I seem to be talking myself out of my earlier opinion! |
