Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me any information at all regarding this vase which has been converted into a lamp probably in the 1930s or 40s. The pattern appears painted rather than scratched. Thank you kindly

As you may already be aware, your vase was most likely made in the twentieth century in the style of the Cizhou type wares. These are a very diverse group of stonewares (not porcelains) produced at numerous kiln sites throughout China, primarily from the Song through the Ming dynasties. They are boldly decorated with slips (e.g., carved slip or sgraffito “scratched slip” techniques) or painted pigments (typically, iron brown) under a clear glaze, and sometimes with overglaze enamels (typically iron red, black and copper green).
