Subject:Japanese Painting of Snipes Amid Reeds - Artist "Soko"
Posted By: Cliff N. Fri, Oct 11, 2024 IP: 172.59.139.141

Hi,

I wanted to see if anyone was familiar with this artist or their working life/career. The name and seal apparently both translate as "Soko" in Japanese, assuming this is indeed a Japanese work. Disregard the protective plastic - I am getting it framed shortly. Any help would be great, thanks!

Best,
Cliff

Reading of signature and seal,
While the second character of the signature can easily be read as 古 (ko), but in the seal it is undoubtedly 谷 (koku)
操谷 Sōkoku as art-name or Kuritani as surname

I can't find any trace of either version neither in my books, nor on the net,

In addition there may be the possibility of Korean
artist.
操谷 (조곡) Jo-gok - as art-name

With regards,
I.Nagy

i do not agree here, the seal and the written character read clearly 古.

Does that mean "gǔ", meaning ancient or old?

The style of the painting and also something in the signature reminded me of Bairei Kono.
But I'm probably off track...
