Subject:Need help identifying artist
Posted By: Kellie Tue, May 20, 2025 IP: 24.32.221.158

Hello!

I have been searching and trying to find out who this artist is and have had no luck.

I am from a museum and we have a Kakejiku (Japanese hanging scroll) in our collection that we don’t know anything about. I learned it’s called a ‘Takasago’, which depicts an elderly couple on a beach with a pine tree, cranes, and a turtle. My best guess is it could’ve been made as a wedding gift or used for decoration in a wedding ceremony.

The name of the artist is 教圓 and probably pronounced Kyoen. I’ve been told the scroll is around the late 18th to early 19th century. I can’t find any artist from that century that uses that name nor have I been able to find similar scrolls or art with the same signature.

Any help or leads would be much appreciated! Thank you so much.

Most likely, Kondō Kyōen 近藤教圓, for whom I found only one piece of information online.
According to it, he was probably active in the Taishō era.
