Subject:DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THIS IS?
Posted By: Leslie Johnson Tue, Sep 26, 2006 IP: 71.195.145.139

I got a lovely bowl at a thrift store about ten years ago. Does anyone know what it says or if it is worth anything? Thanks!

Yes...I'm surprised no one answered you yet.
Inside the Chinese bowl reads: Great Elegant Court (Da Ya Zhai)...referring to Empress Dowager Cixi's court while her son Guangxu was "officially" the Emperor 1875-1908. Basemark reads: Yong Qing Chang Chun (Forever Celebrate
Long Spring)=may you live forever or long time.
See www.gotheborg.com, marks, late Chinese, then scroll down to "recent editions" and find the green bowl, same as yours as to marks. My guess your bowl was made around 1895-1900, but possibly a few years after the dynasty was overthrown in 1908. In other words, it might not be an "imperial" porcelain item, but rather an antique "repro" of the Empress's own bowl but matching its style. In any case, if you don't want it, you can give it to me! (joking, of course). Very nice. walter

Leslie's saucer is a modern fantasy fake.
The original yellow-ground dayazhai pattern was drawn in grisaille (grey overglaze enamel)and iron-red. Further, originals & copies from late 19th/early 20th century have other motifs than Leslie's piece. Please see below an original dayazhai bowl (from Percival David Foundation, London)
Regards, Dan

Beautiful piece! I think I'll just enjoy my lovely fake and I'm so glad that someone had emailed me earlier and told me the history of the piece and what the writing said on it. I had been wondering for a whole decade! :) Thanks for all the feedback - Have a blessed week!
