I am new to all of this. Who can tell me about this blue and white piece? Thank you so much!

This is a modern fake from China. Only decorative value.

Thank you for the information, Pyroman. Is the shape wrong?

SHape is the least of the problems with this item. The first thing that strikes me was the excessive iron "splattering" on the vase. Such iron spot caused by impurities do occur but were considered a flaw. You do get them but not this much and not this evenely spread around. Second was the way the people were painted and color of the cobalt. The clouds are done in a an early Ming style, the classic scroll in a Yuan style, and the figures I do not know what style as it's just not really done that way at all. Plus it has waht appears to be a Jiajing mark and then you have to consider the excessive crudeness of the base.

Betsey,

Pyromaniac is absolutely on target about the stylistic problems with the painting.

In addition, the rocks and foliage are full of aimless blobs and squiggles, as if the painter had not the least idea of how landscape elements were painted historically.

It does not take a sophisticated understanding of painterly styles among the "literati" between 12th and 19th centuries to recognize this right away. All you have to do is take a look at two or more landscapes by good artists to see the mistakes.

There are modern fakes painted by much better artists, so painterly quality is not an infallible guide. But it is always an element to look at.

Best regards,
Judy
