Subject:Dating of "Chenghua" wucai bowl (deep dish)
Posted By: Walter C.Sterling,Jr. Thu, Oct 19, 2006 IP: 66.30.60.226

Tony:
This bowl measures 10-1/4" wide and 2-3/8" deep. It has an old, two curved (?) shaped bottom. The iron oxide bled into the porcelain, but the underglaze blue stayed OK. It has a basemark similar to early Kangxi "Chenghua" but its theme of so many insects/birds reminds me of late Ming (Wanli). I realize it is more a relic more than a porcelain treasure, but I do think it is very old and may have been a genuine grave object. I doubt anyone would have gone through the trouble to fake this particular item since it is not that beautiful. (I like birds and bees!) Best, Walter
P.S. I've been on your Website before when you
let me know my "Xianfeng" was a fake.

See Pic from Website of an antique porcelain dealer. It says the plate is from Kangxi period. It show similar diaper pattern on rim; and shape of bee/fly in the panel. Maybe an indication the Chenghua plate is Kangxi period or transitional.

Since no one has replied I guess I have to be the one to do so. This dish is a modern fake. It is neither mark and period or Kangxi. The plate is a hodge podge of designs from various periods. The enamel colors are all wrong with fake chatter marks on the base to try to make the dish resemble Kraak wares of the Wanli period. Here's a very sound advice: Avoid purchases of Ming or Qing porcelain items which seems excessively dirty like this one which seem to have just been recovered from a mud pit.
