Subject:Imari plate - how old?
Posted By: Jonathan Sun, Oct 29, 2006 IP: 195.158.91.23

Hi, I would appreciate it if someone could tell me the age of this plate. I know nothing about it except that it is called Imari. It measures aprox. 23cm in diameter. It has what looks like grit stuck in the glaze arround the foot rim. The actual rim of the plate has a yellow/brown band. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Jon.
P.s. sorry about the photo quality, the colours do not look so muddy in reality.

Jonathan,

It's very difficult to tell much from your poor dark and/or blurry photos.

The brown glaze around the plate's rim argues for its being a Chinese product. It could be 19th century made at a southern kiln other than Jingdezhen, but it could be 2nd half of 18th century.

However, a closeup of the footring with some of the base may help to determine more (in focus and with enough light). An in-focus and adequately lit photo of the plate front would also be helpful.

Best regards,
Judy

Hi, here are some better photos. Some more observatons are that there is some piting in the glaze, most being on the back of the plate and can be seen in the closeup photo of the foot rim. There is also a little crazing in some areas. When held up to strong light (for example the sun) the plate becomes translucent. Thanks and kind regards, Jon.
P.S. if it is anything rare or valuable let me know!
