Subject:Looking for some help with an old bowl
Posted By: George Ingraham Thu, Nov 09, 2006 IP: 70.193.212.116

Anyone willing to take a look, would be greatly appreciated!

There is a chance it may be from Africa. Only because the persons mother whom I recieved it from said her mother purchased many things of African origin.

No markings at all.

Pics of bowl:

She thought that the bowl went to this African stand. She was not sure though.

I tried to upload the pictures but it said they are to big, so here are links that you may have to copy and paste to see.

George,

Try taking some pics in lighted area. One from the side should show the whole profile, preferably in focus so the ?decoration can be seen.

Best regards,
Judy

Thankyou for taking a look Judy.

Hope this pic helps. Does not look like decoration. Something on the surface??

George,

Please state size (diameter, height).

I still can't tell much without photos with overall illumination. Is it basically golden yellow with red and dark-brown mottling?

Is it fired hard (does it ring or ping when flicked with a fingernail) or soft (does it go "clunk")?

Please photograph base in a lighted environment, not just flash. Outdoors would be fine.

Best regards,
Judy

Thankyou again for taking a look Judy. It is greatly appreciated!

Here are a few more pics taken outside.

It does make a "clunk" sound. And I am not an expert, but does not seem to have any type of glaze. It just seems to have been dried/kilned without?

6" wide and 4" tall.

Sorry about not being able to figure out how to post the pictures using the upload. One nice thing about viewing them through photobucket is you get a great view!

Here are the links to view them from photobucket:

Thankyou again!

Dear George,

You still have managed to not show a fully-lit photo of the whole pot, but try to do that in the future.

I don't have a clue where it was made, iron-bearing clays with major impurities are available nearly everywhere.

I have no reason to think it is especially old but could not say it is brand-new either.

Your suspicion that it was made in Africa may be correct. Africa is a big place.

So. An attractive pot made somewhere, possibly recently (within past 30 years). Or not.

Good hunting,
Judy
