Subject:Question of authenticity of Chinese blue & white ewer
Posted By: Mike H Thu, Nov 16, 2006 IP: 198.169.188.225

I recently purchased this ewer at an antique show but wonder about it's age and authenticity. It is precisely, and beautifully, hand-painted and has a Yongzheng mark on the base. However, the 'nianhao' characters are missing a few lines and the seal is slightly off-balance. There is pooling of the cobalt and the texture of the glaze is slightly rougher over the areas where the blue is heaviest, which leads me to believe it was fired in a wood-fueled kiln.

Any insight you're able to provide would be appreciated.
