Subject:Please help us identify brushpot...
Posted By: Katja Thu, Dec 14, 2006 IP: 124.184.242.135

The attached photos show a very fine antique artwork. I believe that it is a bruspot possibly from China.
It is carved from (soap??) stone and signed (by the artist ??). The carvings show landscape with clouds and trees and a man riding a dragon.
The dimensions are:
Diameter: 10.5cm, Height: 12cm, Wall Thickness: 0.9cm
Even the bottom has nice carvings.
Thanks to anybody in advance for their input.
Kind Regards
Katja

I think this is a 18th Century Chinese soap stone. It is for the scholar's taste. The signature is Yu Xuan of Yang Yu Xuan of the late 16th Century. I do not think it is by the artist as the style is late 18th Century.

Dear Michael,

thank you very much for your reply.
Every step helps me to identify the item and who made it. It is really exciting, almost like a story.

Do you know more about Yang Yu Xuan ? I will search on the internet, but if you are aware of any specific sites could you please let me know ?

Kind Regards & Merry Christmas
Katja

There is not much information about this artist in English. I can try to summarize some information for you from Chines documents, if you think it is necessary. Do you own this item? or are you doing academic research?
